47uF Pre-wired Equal Length Lead Capacitor
The capacitor on a tattoo machine is much more important than most people realize. Primarily, the capacitor reduces the spark at the contact point. That is the easiest way to tell if the capacitor on a machine needs to be replaced. If the capacitor is non-functional there will be a large, bright spark at the contact point when the machine is running.
Choosing the right capacitor for a machine depends on how you like your machine to run. It will be a little different for each tattooer and generally requires a little trial and error. Because the capacitor holds some voltage, it provides some backup power to the machine. When some resistance is put against the machine, it will draw some extra power from the capacitor.
Capacitors with smaller microfarad ratings will result in faster machine speeds, with less backup power. Capacitors with larger microfarad ratings will make a machine run slower, with more backup power. The general rule of thumb is: smaller capacitors (10uF, 15uF, 22uF) for liners, larger capacitors (33uF, 47uF, 68uF) for shaders and coloring machines. If you want more or less backup reserve power, you may want to put a smaller or larger capacitor on any machine.
Capacitors have a positive and a negative lead. Install them correctly - the positive lead to the insulated back binding post, the negative lead to the top binding post. Axial capacitors have one lead on each end and radial capacitors have both leads on one end.
